March 2017: Desk ergonomics, no joke!

The bad news is there is no perfect position for each and every one of us. Women, men, short, tall, none of us have the same morphology. Also, humans have evolved for the upright stance, walking and moving; it has only been about one hundred years that our jobs keep us in the sitting position for hours at a time. You must think of ergonomics as a compromise: the sitting position is not adapted for your body but we must try to minimize its negative impact.

Here is a document from Health Agency of Montérégie giving you details on the basic rules to follow when adjusting your chair, desk, keypad and mouse.

Once all these rules have been applied, the ideal is actually not to keep this position for too long!! You must find reasons to get up: drinking lots of water will force to get up to go the bathroom! Meetings between colleagues can be done while walking instead of sitting. Go see your colleague in person instead of writing an email. Put the garbage and printer at a certain distance to obligate yourself to get up more often! There might be a slight temporary change in work efficacy, but it will be worth a work environment that keeps you in better physical health!
